The old market town of Evesham is right in the centre of the Vale of Evesham, sheltered by the Cotswold and Malvern Hills and straddling the River Avon.
The area offers some of the prettiest countryside in the United Kingdom. From the tranquil banks of the River Avon to the undulating hills and peaceful wooded slopes of the Cotswolds, the Vale is an area renown for its fruit and vegetables since mediaeval times.
Evesham can be traced right back to 800AD when Evesham Abbey was founded where the Virgin Mary was believed to have appeared to a humble swineherd.
The town grew up around the Abbey, one of the most powerful in England, which was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540. Only the churches of All Saints and St. Lawrence and the fine 16th century Bell Tower still remain.
These wonderful buildings form an impressive backdrop to the
River Avon at Evesham, a very popular recreational area offering everything from fishing to walking and boating.
Abbey Park, with its Victorian bandstand, offers music on Sunday afternoons from June to September, where visitors can relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of a lazy, sunny afternoon.
Perhaps the most notable buildings in the town is The Almonry. Dating back to 1400, this was once the home of the abbey’s almoner who gave help to the needy and hospitality to visitors to the Abbey. Now a Heritage Centre housing a wealth of information and artifacts regarding the history of the great Abbey and the defeat of Baron Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham in 1265.
